New HARU collection sets the table from soups to sushi

Haru, our first complete dinnerware collection, elevates your favourite dishes, from soups to sushi, risotto to ramen, and macarons to mochi. Haru collection is an homage to Tove Jansson’s life and work. In fact, the collection's name comes from Tove Jansson’s favourite summer spot, the rocky islet ”Haru”, island Klovharun, which means spring in Japanese.

Designed with Finnish-Japanese aesthetics

The soft and serene look creates sophisticated table settings at all meals, while the playful Moomin illustrations put smiles on faces. While creating the collection, the designer duo, Finnish-Japanese Naoto Niidome and Finnish-French Lautenbacher, studied the shapes of the Finnish archipelago, and Haru’s rounded design resembles its pebbles and rocks. Since Niidome and Lautenbacher both have backgrounds in living and working in Japan, the nature-inspired Finnish design is complemented with a touch of Japanese flair.

In 2008, the year when Niidome and Lautenbacher began their collaboration, when the two were both awarded the Young Designer of the Year prize. Until then, they were unknown to each other. Niidome’s education is in interior architecture and clothing design, while Lautenbacher is a ceramicist.

Today, the designer duo works at the intersection of art and design, co-creating multidimensional installations, which often focus on humanity as a part of nature. Together with the design team of Moomin Arabia, Lautenbacher and Niidome crafted a brand new tableware series, which imitates Tove Jansson’s original garland patterns in blue and white tones. Upon learning about the concept, the designer couple were immediately onboard:

Cobalt blue is a timeless porcelain colour, and Tove Jansson’s drawings are just wonderful – like many, we absolutely love them. In a way, our role was to give form for these drawings, a bit like a painter’s canvas but in the realm of tableware.

Illustrations from Tove Jansson’s wreath drawings

Haru’s ink-blue outline illustrations are by Moomin Arabia’s in-house team. The featured Moomin friends, plants and elements, also picked from the archipelago’s nature, are adapted from the wreaths Tove Jansson drew for her Moomin books and other illustration work.

It's time to get your spoons, forks, knives, and chopsticks ready!
