Every Home is one of a kind

The Moomin stories are turning eighty years, and we are celebrating the anniversary with a truly special collectible treasure. The Home mug and its hand-painted illustration capture the spirit of the Moomin way of life: Everyone is always welcome at Moominhouse, just as they are.

Four Home-mugs with decorative hand-painted designs of Moomin-house on a wooden board in a workshop setting.

Inspired by the story where the Moomin family finds their home

The illustration on the mug reflects the deeply emotional story of the very first Moomin tale, The Moomins and the Great Flood, written by Tove Jansson during World War II. Writing this story with its happy ending brought comfort during challenging times.

In the story, Moominpappa has been missing for a long time. A flood covers everything, leaving many creatures homeless and seeking refuge, including Moominmamma and Moomintroll. Along the way, the mutual support shared by fellow travelers brings the Moomin family back together. As the flood clears, the Moomins arrive in a small, blooming valley—the most beautiful place they’ve ever seen. There stands Moominhouse, built by Moominpappa himself for his family but thought to have been lost to the flood. The family has found their home!

In the Moomin stories Tove Jansson wrote later, Moominhouse has welcomed many new family members, visitors, lodgers, and seekers of refuge. The Moomins have always ensured that everyone feels welcome and accepted just as they are. It is a very moominous story.

No two Home mugs are alike

The Home mug is a true collector's gem, as it is part of a special limited edition of 8,000 pieces, with each mug being hand-painted and unique. Additionally, each mug features the Moomin 80 anniversary stamp on the bottom, a serial number indicating it's part of a limited edition, and the initials of the artisan who hand-painted the mug. The Home mugs sold through the online raffle sale were awarded to new lucky owners in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, and Japan in the spring of 2025. If luck didn't favor you in the online raffle, you can still try your luck in selected Moomin Arabia stores in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, where the store lottery will continue until the end of 2025.

Mugs number 1 and 2 have already found their homes

The first piece of the hand-painted Home mug, celebrating the Moomin 80th anniversary, was gifted to the spouse of the President of the Republic of Finland, Suzanne Innes-Stubb by Nathalie Ahlström, CEO of Fiskars Group. The mug was handed over at the opening of the Tove Jansson – Paradise exhibition at the HAM Helsinki Art Museum in Finland on October 24.

“And there, in the midst of the meadow, stood a house that almost looked like a tall stove, very elegant and painted blue.”
