Moomintroll encounters The Groke on a winter night
What makes the Winternight Glow mug unique is its wonderful illustration, which focuses on Moominvalley’s most feared yet misunderstood creature, The Groke.
The mug depicts a scene from the novel Moominland Midwinter (1957). Having seen the scary Groke only once before from a distance, the thought of her keeps troubling Moomintroll.
On one winter night, the encounter happens on a mountain where a great winter fire has been built to drive away the cold and darkness. When the Groke approaches the bonfire, her icy-cold presence extinguishes it, including Moomintroll’s oil lamp. With everyone frozen with fright, Too-ticky explains that The Groke is just terribly lonely and, like everyone else, would like warmth and closeness.
The lyrical illustration is distinctive from other Moomin mugs in style, as it is based on a painting created by Tove Jansson using the gouache technique, rather than the line drawings seen on the pages of the Moomin books.
Moomin Arabia and the Moomin Museum’s second collaboration
The mug is a second mug produced by Moomin Arabia in collaboration with the Moomin Museum. The first was the summer-themed Moominvalley mug, which celebrated the completion of the renovated museum in 2017. Also based on a gouache painting, it was called the “Art Mug” due to its distinctive style.
The world’s only Moomin-focused museum, Moomin Museum in Tampere, Finland, is an experiential art museum for Moomin fans and art lovers of all ages. It presents a rare collection of Moomin art donated to Tampere Art Museum in 1986 by Tove Jansson. The Moomin Mug Mania exhibition explores the popularity of the iconic Moomin mugs, and will be on view in the museum from 25 September 2026 to 5 January 2028.

"Therewas no doubt about it, the Groke was pleased to see him. She didn’t mind about the hurricane lamp. She was delighted that he had come to meet her."
