Collection: Rebel Club

The new Rebel Club collection does not follow the paths you’ve seen before. Based on Tove Jansson’s Moomin comics, it’s colourful, cheeky, and even a bit absurd.

The new Rebel Club collection does not follow the paths you’ve seen before. Based on Tove Jansson’s Moomin comics, it’s colourful, cheeky, and even a bit absurd, yet all the same charming, cheerful, and exciting – and easy to relate to.

Quirky illustrations with bold colours

Rebel Club starts a new series of 0.4‑litre mugs and stands out with fresh colours and playful illustrations which are paired with texts picked from the Moomin comics.

With humorous storytelling characteristic of these early comics, Rebel Club offers a fresh perspective on the characters you thought you knew alongside with some over-the-top drama and moodiness to enjoy: a rebellious Moominpappa, a drama and stress-prone Moomintroll, curious Hattifatteners, a thrill-seeking Little My, and a decisive Snorkmaiden.

The staple of the collection are the four 0.4-litre mugs that showcase the stories with the expressive illustrations laid out like mini comic scenes. Filled with attitude, drama, and situations we all can relate to, the designs extend to a selection of t-shirts and accessories, such as scarves, canvas bags, keychains, and notebooks which will cheer your day with bright colours and good-humoured mood.

The Rebel Club collection consists of four designs based on five different Moomin comic strips.

Rebel Club

“No one tells us what to do” is a sentence that sets the principle when, excited about Moominvalley’s latest trend to join secret societies, Moominpappa starts a "Rebel Club" based on breaking rules. Ironically, the club becomes the very opposite, making its own rules. The design is based on the comic strip Club Life in Moomin Valley (1957).

Talk It All Out

Oh, the drama, the drama! In the comic strip Moomin Falls in Love (1956), Moomintroll crushes on a glamorous theatre actress, leaving Snorkmaiden feeling insecure and jealous. Emotions grow overly dramatic and misunderstandings pile up. Even though love can be messy, emotional and complicated, the two are able to talk it out – and play it out in a scene of a theatre play worthy of their quarrel.

Service, please! In the back story of the design, Hattifatteners climb in through the Moominhouse’s window, demanding cocktails, even though the house is already swarming with uninvited guests. Moomintroll is close to losing it, but Little My seems to enjoy the sense of danger around the electric Hattifatteners. The design is based on the comic strips Moomin and the Comet (1958) and Moomin and the Brigands (1954–55).

Boss Lady

Stick to your goals! In the comic strip The Conscientious Moomins (1958), a member of the “League of Conscience and Duty” arrives in Moominvalley introducing a modern lifestyle, including work, schedules, and duty. Snorkmaiden also decides to embrace a more ambitious lifestyle, and gets a job as a secretary. However, in reality, she’s mainly looking for office romance. When she realises a cleaned typewriter is the most romantic gesture she’ll get from her boss, she quits.

Twenty-one years of Moomin comics

When Tove Jansson began to draw Moomins for the British newspaper the Evening News in 1954, the Moomin stories shifted to a humorous, more satirical tone mainly targeted for a grown-up audience. In 1957, Tove’s brother, Lars Jansson, began to assist her with the scripts until 1960, after which Lars continued the series solo until 1975.

Rebel Club will be part of the continuous Moomin Arabia collections and will be extended with new items and designs already next year.

The Rebel Club collection becomes available for Moomin Arabia Family members before others, on the on 27 July 2026 from moominarabia.com. The collection will be available to everyone both in-store and through a wide range of retailers from 29 July 2026.

These illustrations are inspired by the beloved comics Moomin on the Riviera (1955) and Moomin Under Sail (1959). As the Riviera story goes, the travel plan is Moominpappa and Snorkmaiden’s idea, because they want to travel south and “feast all night”. Some elements for the illustration are also picked from the Moomin and the Comet (1958) comic.
